Chief and Council Checklist

This exercise allows Chief and Council to identify specific roles and responsibilities and to determine what essential, recommended or additional services that their First Nation: have been met, needs work on or is not applicable in their governance structure.

  1. How does Council want to address culture, language and traditions within their policy? 
  2. How are the values of the people reflected in the policy?
  3. How did you traditionally resolve conflict?
  4. What is your understanding of the role of community in the governance structure? What has worked and what can work better in terms of community engagement?

Separating Administration from Politics

With the changes in First Nations do business and work for their people, need to understand their roles in relation to interaction with staff members and the administration office. 

The exercise portion will have the Chief and Council look at two questions and work through them. The questions are:

  1. What are the key challenges in separating administration from politics?
  2. What concerns/experiences can Council share with respect to their roles and responsibilities that are important in developing policy to manage administration and politics?
