We are currently trying to piece together the history of the Tribal Council. It was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1983, called the Alliance Tribal Council. We have very little information on the activities of the organization over the years, so any help on enlightening us would be appreciated. Please contact the office if you have any information that would help us learn our past.

Naut'sa mawt Tribal Council is a not-for-profit society registered in British Columbia. NmTC is governed by a Board of Directors, one from each of our member First Nations, appointed annually by their respective Councils. NmTC is charged with providing advisory services to its members in five delivery areas, namely Economic Development, Financial Management, Community Planning, Technical Services and Governance pursuant to an agreement signed with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada each year. While the core of our service delivery is provided by the funding received under this agreement, it is interesting to note that, in recent years, core-AANDC funding comprised only 20 to 30 percent of the Tribal Council's annual revenue. Most of the services provided by NmTC to its members are paid from self-generated revenues.
Our membership includes the First Nations of Halalt, Homalco, Klahoose, Malahat, Nanoose, Sliammon, Snuneymuxw, Stz'uminus, Tsawwassen, Tsleil-Waututh and T'Sou-ke. All members are Coast Salish, and traditionally speak a dialect of the Hulquiminum language. As the map shows, these communities surround the Georgia Strait and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, or as some call it, the Salish Sea.
As a group, members of Naut'sa mawt Tribal Council First Nations amount to approximately 6,500 Aboriginal people. Contrary to the demographics of other Canadians, these people are young, (nearly half are under 35 years of age) and are eager to join the workforce to replace aging baby-boomers!
